The Butterfly Project
The butterfly project is probably one of the best projects I’ve heard about in relation to self harm and depression. Instead of condemning or lecturing those who suffer from depression and who cut themselves, this encourages them with a simple thing anyone can do.
Butterflies are all unique and beautiful in their own right, no matter what colour, pattern, size they are, or what habitat they live in.
What is the butterfly project?
1. When you feel like you want to cut, take a marker, pen, or sharpies and draw a butterfly on your arm or hand. 2. Name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.3. You must let the butterfly fade naturally. NO scrubbing it off.4. If you cut before the butterfly is gone, you’ve killed it. If you don’t cut, it lives.5. If you have more than one butterfly, cutting kills all of them.6. Another person may draw them on you. These butterflies are extra special. Take good care of them.7. Even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyways, to show your support. If you do this, name it after someone you know that cuts or is suffering right now, and tell them. It could help.

I know a lot of people think this is pretty stupid. I thought it was at first too, y’know? I was like, what the fuck is a 2D sharpie butterfly on my arm gonna do?
It’s actually a lovely method. I always named my butterfly after my friend Sonia, who passed away a few years back. I’d look at that butterfly and know that Sonia wouldn’t want me to cut.
I used this method for the first few weeks every time I tried to stop cutting. I used it for two months last year. And it has now been over 1 year and 1 month since I last cut. The butterfly really did help with the urges.
Funny how the most stupid sounding things have such big effects.
